Young Art Exhibition
Every year, Regent Learning enters the Young Art Exhibition hosted by the Royal College of Art in London.
The Young Art Exhibition is held in support of Cancer Research UK, has been running for 20 years and is now the biggest annual art exhibition of its kind.
The theme of the Young Art Exhibition is ‘Children helping children’ with funds raised during the exhibition going towards researching the genetic causes of cancer in children.
Children who attend the Christmas Holiday School at Regent Learning create a piece of work using a variety of materials on paper no bigger than A3 and may choose a theme of their choice. The entries are then sent each January to the Royal College of Art for judging which is done according to age by a selection of famous experts.
Those fortunate enough to win, have their work professionally framed and mounted. Other entries which are deemed exceptional are mounted for display for the three-day exhibition every May which is always an extremely popular event with crowds of prominent artists, experts, proud parents and art fans.
The pieces of work are then auctioned off with all profits going to the very worthy Cancer Research UK. Postcards are also available to buy for those who would like a small memento of the exhibition.
This is always a highly popular event at Regent Learning and the children are always highly enthusiastic about entering.
In the spring of 2010, two of our children were chosen to have their work displayed at the Exhibition: Anuja Rasakulasuriar, then 6 and Jay Nathwani, then 10. We were all extremely proud of their achievement, particularly when we heard that they helped raise over £70,000 for such a worthy cause!
Children In Need
Last year, Regent Learning in Edgware decided to run a Spell-a-thon in aid of Children in Need in November 2010.
In October, the children were given a list of subject-related spellings by their teachers upon which they would be tested.
Over the next month, they then went and got sponsorship from family and friends in order to earn as much money as possible. Each spelling was charged at a certain amount, so the more spellings they got right, they more money they earned.
On the day itself, the children were all lined up in the classroom and the teachers tested them one by one on their spellings. There was a little bit of nerves but the children rose to the occasion and their sponsors had to dig deep in their pockets when they kept getting them all right.
Extra money was raised using mathematical puzzle challenges and through selling popular bath and beauty products.
The event was a big triumph, the children all had a lot of fun and we raised a total of £182.40 which went towards helping disadvantaged children across the UK.
We are now looking forward to repeating the event next year…
